CHAPTER 41

On the Saturday afternoon Brett was scheduled to wrestle for Squared Circle Express, Kyra dropped by his hotel. They hadn’t seen each other since the previous July, even though they spoke on the phone as often as their schedules permitted.

He gave her a hug. “To whom do I owe for this pleasant surprise?”

“I have a week off between bookings and I knew you were having a show tonight. I wanted to come and give you my support.”

“Well, I won’t complain about getting visits from a beautiful woman, since it doesn’t happen very often.”

“You’re charming as always. Is it true they changed your opponent for tonight?”

“Yeah, I was supposed to have a single’s match with Norman Young, but at almost the last minute, Gil thought it would be a good idea to toss me in with The Hipsters for us to face three other guys ‘to be announced.’ Sometimes I hate when he does that shit, because it gives me less time to prepare.”

“You’ve done last-minute work before and always came out well.”

“Most of those times, I was jobbing.”

“A few times, the powers that be let you win.”

“True, but the way things have gone for me over the last six months, I wouldn’t want to go back to the days before I was released.”

“Me neither! Sure, I make less money with my current gigs than I did before I lost my own contract, but I’m a lot happier since I’m free to wrestle the way I want instead of parading around a ring half-naked to draw in horny teenage boys for ratings when I wasn‘t being scrutinized for my weight.”

“At least in the independents, few guys see the women as eye candy and sluts only there for a cheap lay.”

“That’s so true. Most guys I’ve worked with on some of my bookings have been really sweet. They don’t care if I weigh one-thirty, and it’s been so nice getting booked in some high-quality matches without having to fuck most of the talent roster, the writing team, or upper management.”

“Another joy of the independents, none of the power games bullshit. You should also consider Orlando Wrestling. No having to kiss management‘s ass for even the smallest favor, the schedule’s lighter, I’m able to work for them and do some independent shows, and Stephanie Cross is one of the best people I’ve worked for since Graham Sobeck and Gil Preston. Why don’t you give her a call? I’ll be happy to put in a good word for you.”

“I’ll do it when I get back to my room. You’d really vouch for me?”

“That’s what friends do, sugar. It would be cool to work with a woman who has one of the best asses in this business again.”

“Brett, stop, you’re making me blush.”

“Only telling it how it is.”

“Oh! I forgot to tell you, I talked to her about a week ago.”

“Who?”

“Karen.”

Oh, shit. “How did that happen?”

“The night you had your Orlando Wrestling debut match. She interviewed me awhile back, and we sort of hit it off and I kept her number.
